Jonathan and David, a Very Special Friendship

Dag 11 av 16

Jonathan and David made a covenant “And Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, ‘May the Lord take vengeance on David's enemies.’ And Jonathan made David swear again by his love for him, for he loved him as he loved his own soul.” (1 Samuel 20:16-17) Jonathan and David both knew the future was uncertain. David was in danger because Saul wanted to kill him. Possibly he would have to flee. Jonathan was the crown prince but would never be king, and his father was inexplicable. In this difficult situation, they offered each other support. Jonathan promised to hear his father out so David would know if he had to flee or was safe for the time being. Conversely, he asked for David's protection once he was king: "Will you not, if I live then, prove to me the LORD's kindness, so that I do not have to die?" And if Jonathan were to perish - which was by no means inconceivable - David would not destroy his descendants but rather provide for them. The promises made were confirmed with an oath. Jonathan and David made a covenant, a solemn agreement. They would remain faithful to each other as friends, no matter what might happen. Are there people in your life that you want to support unconditionally, even if it were to cost you a lot? Have you ever expressed that to those people? And conversely, are there people who will be there for you and your children if needed?
