Esther: For Such a Time as ThisPrøve

# Esther’s Exemplary Wisdom, Obedience, and Faith ### By Debra Marsalisi “Hathak went back and reported to Esther what Mordecai had said. Then she instructed him to say to Mordecai, ‘All the king’s officials and the people of the royal provinces know that for any man or woman who approaches the king in the inner court without being summoned the king has but one law: that they be put to death unless the king extends the gold scepter to them and spares their lives. But thirty days have passed since I was called to go to the king.’”— Esther 4:9–11 (NIV) In the Book of Esther, we find a captivating story of a young Jewish woman chosen to be queen, unexpectedly thrust into a position of influence and power within the Persian Empire. Esther’s journey is one of profound wisdom, unwavering obedience, and inspiring faith. She serves as a timeless example of how these virtues can shape our lives, helping us to navigate the challenges of our own lives with grace and purpose. Esther’s wisdom is evident from the very beginning. When Mordecai, her cousin, informs her of Haman’s evil plot to destroy the Jewish people, she understands the gravity of the situation. Recognizing that her unique position as queen grants her access to King Xerxes, Esther doesn’t rush into action impulsively. Instead, she exercises wisdom by taking time to assess the situation and weigh the cost of her decision. We see her seek God’s guidance through prayer and fasting (Esther 4:16). In our own lives, wisdom invites us to pause, reflect, and seek God before making important decisions. Esther teaches us when we desire God’s wisdom over our own, it can lead us to actions that bear lasting fruit. When Mordecai first reports to Esther Haman’s plot, he highlights the urgency of the situation, reminding her that her position as queen is no accident but a divine assignment. He also emphasizes the role of God’s providence, suggesting that Esther was placed in her position “for such a time as this” (Esther 4:14 NIV). These words ring true throughout history, inviting us to recognize that our circumstances are not random; rather, they’re intricately woven threads in the tapestry of God’s plan for our lives. Esther’s obedience is a testament to her trust in God’s providence. Despite the danger, she takes Mordecai’s advice by agreeing to approach the king uninvited—an act that could result in her death. Esther’s obedience reminds us of the significance of being in alignment with God’s will, especially when entering into a dangerous unknown. Her unwavering obedience teaches us that courage and obedience go hand in hand, especially when we trust in God’s sovereignty over our lives. Esther's willingness to risk her life to save her people mirrors Christ's sacrificial obedience. Jesus faced brutal suffering, yet embraced the cross for the sake of humanity. Because of His obedience, we’re invited to come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Hebrews 4:16). There’s a stark contrast between our King and the kings of this world. Each step Esther takes into the king’s inner court reminds us of her depth of sacrifice. What are we willing to risk for the sake of the kingdom of God? Obedience even unto death? Esther’s wisdom, obedience, and faith can inspire us to seek God’s wisdom in our decisions, obey His leading even when it’s difficult and dangerous, and trust in His providence no matter the outcome. Esther’s story is a reminder that our lives are part of a larger picture—one that God is creating. Just as Esther’s actions had far-reaching consequences, our choices and attitudes can have a lasting impact on those around us and the fulfillment of God’s purposes. Pause: Is God asking you to enter the dangerous unknown and requiring virtues of courage, faith, and godly wisdom? Practice: Spend time with the Lord and your personal journal. Ask Him to show you verses pertaining to obedience and to show you if you’ve been obedient to the things He’s asked of you. Pray: Dear Lord, help my decisions and attitudes to be deeply rooted in Your Word. Please give me wisdom to seek You in all things, big or small, the obedience and courage to step into the unknown, and the faith to understand I’m in the palm of Your hand. Amen.
