Doctors' Life Support

Dag 4 av 21

# Love isn’t love, till you give it away The practice of palliative medicine makes us acquainted with the reality that life on this earth will not go on forever. It is said that on one’s deathbed, nobody talks about the career paths not taken, or the corporate ladders not climbed, or the wasted wealth, but rather the lack of time spent with loved ones. Many doctors may boast of long and successful careers. But how many can have the satisfaction of having touched many lives? While being technically competent at diagnosing and managing patients is important, it is also important to connect more deeply with patients, to offer them a listening ear and even speak a word of encouragement to them or share Christ with them. What truly is worthwhile in life? “Love isn’t love, till you give it away” — goes the lyrics of a song by Michael W Smith. Each encounter with our patients should be characterized by love. This is only possible if one is connected to God and has an unhurried attitude at work. It is so often the case that one is emotionally and spiritual drained and that one is trying to “clear cases” as fast as possible. The days of our lives are a gift to us after all, something we didn’t earn. Let us give freely of our time and energies to minister to the patients whom God brings our way. Prayer: Lord, Help me to be generous with my time, especially with those who are in pain or despair. Amen
