Light and DarknessPrøve
Darkness should be exposed
Christians should live as children of light. But there will be others around them who still do “works of darkness”. The apostle Paul exhorts his readers not to take part in these works, but instead to expose them. Christians should not only avoid sin, but also unmask it. This is possible if they live in the light of God, for “when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light”. This light allows them to see things for what they really are. The Holy Spirit who dwells in them, will guide them to discern what is good and what is wrong, by deepening their understanding of God’s will as they grow in faith.
If we see a brother or sister in Christ taking part in “the works of darkness”, we should warn them. We should point out to them that their behavior is not according to God’s Word. That way, we can help them to get back on track. For “whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins” (James 5:20).
Are there still works of darkness in your own heart that need to be exposed?

Immediately in the first chapter of the Bible, we read how God created light. And further on in the Bible, light is often used as a metaphor for God’s domain as opposed to the domain of sin and death. Jesus even calls Himself “the Light of the world”. Light and darkness thus have an important place in the Bible. This reading plan presents a selection of verses about this topic.
