Study Tip: I recommend you start by reading all of 1 Peter 4 to get a broad overview of this chapter before you begin mining through verses 1-6. Read and Write: Before we dive into studying the beginning of 1 Peter 4, be sure to read over the last portion of 1 Peter 3. This will help us gain a fuller context and see the connection to 1 Peter 4:1’s kickoff word, “Therefore.” * List the main themes or subjects emphasized in today’s text. * Write a summary to encompass the main message of 1 Peter 4:1-6. * Make a list (according to 1 Peter 4:3-4) of what the ungodly do. Reflect: * What attitude or mindset did Christ have when He suffered unjustly? * How does taking on this mindset “arm” or equip us in our suffering? * Why would our suffering help us overcome personal sin? * Bible commentators have different interpretations for the meaning of the “dead” in verse six. The main theories are: The dead are Christians who had recently passed away, those “spiritually” dead, or all the physically dead before the coming of Christ. At any rate, Peter’s main point stands: The Gospel was and is being preached throughout human history, and judgment is coming for all humanity.
