The watchman's call

Ezekiel was a priest in Jerusalem during the first Babylonian invasion (2 Kings 24:8–17). Although the city was spared, many Israelites – including Ezekiel – were taken into exile. In a foreign land, far from the temple and familiarity, God called Ezekiel to a hard and holy assignment. He was appointed as a watchman – a spiritual lookout who’d listen to God and warn the people. It wasn’t a comfortable calling. It took courage, obedience and an open ear to heaven.

But this role wasn’t just for Ezekiel. In our own way, we’re all called to be watchmen – to shine light, speak truth in love, and gently guide others toward God. You don’t need a platform or title to fulfil this calling. A willing heart is enough. Hope rises when we realise our lives carry purpose in God’s greater story. Even in exile seasons – when things feel uncertain or heavy – He calls us to be His voice. Sometimes that voice brings warning. Other times it brings comfort. But it always comes from love. Maybe you’ve felt weary, unsure if your voice matters. Or perhaps fear has kept you silent. But the same Spirit that empowered Ezekiel lives in you. God never expects you to do it alone. He equips those He calls. Your quiet faithfulness – your simple ‘yes’ – might be the turning point in someone else’s story.

Prayer: Lord, thank You that You’ve positioned me with purpose. Teach me to hear Your voice clearly and to speak with courage, love and grace. Help me be a light to those around me and to walk faithfully in the role You’ve given me. Amen.

Ezekiel

Do you feel like God is calling you to step into something scary or unknown? Well, you’re not alone! All throughout the Bible, God didn’t just call people into difficult assignments, He promised to stay near them, He prepared them, He comforted them – and this five-day plan gives us an example of this through a snapshot of Ezekiel’s life.
