#4. Talents & Gifts

Some people seem to know exactly what they’re good at. Others aren’t so sure. But one thing is certain: whatever your strengths, they’re not random – they’re part of God’s plan. And like anything else He gives, they are meant to be stewarded.

That means your talents, skills, and spiritual gifts are not just personal assets for your own use. They are part of your calling. God gave them to you not to build your brand or boost your confidence, but to serve others and build up His Church.

It is just as the Apostle Peter writes,

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” – 1 Peter 4:10 NIV

That verse says it plainly: your gifts are a form of grace. They don’t belong to you – they flow through you. And your job is to use them well.

This is why spiritual gifts and talents come in at #4 on the stewardship list.

They are important God-given tools for Kingdom service, but they don’t carry the eternal weight of the gospel, the daily impact of relationships, or fundamental structure of time. You can’t use your gifts well if you haven’t already surrendered your time, influence, and heart to God.

Some gifts are easy to spot. Others take time and testing.

But whether your strength is teaching, building, leading, listening, encouraging, praying, or simply showing up with a willing heart, all of it matters. And all of it can be used by God – if you’re willing.

Reluctance is common – but hang in there.

Maybe you’re unsure where you fit.

Maybe you’ve been burned before.

Maybe you’ve told yourself someone else is more qualified.

But the body of Christ doesn’t work that way. As Paul says in 1 Corinthians 12, every part is needed. And when one part holds back – even if that is just you – then the whole body suffers.

That’s why stewardship matters. Because hiding your gifts doesn’t protect them – it wastes them. And eventually, it weakens your own sense of purpose and belonging.

Jesus told a parable about servants entrusted with different sums of money. Two of them put what they were given to use – and were praised. One buried his share and was rebuked. Not because he broke the rules, but because he didn’t do anything with what he had (see Matthew 25:14–30). That story actually isn’t just about money – it’s about everything God places in our hands.

So ask yourself these questions:

What has God placed in your hands?
Are you stewarding them for the building of God’s Kingdom, right where you are?
If not, how can you do that?

You don’t need to be the most talented person in the room. You just need to be faithful.

Start small. Offer what you have. Pay attention to what gives you energy and where others affirm you. And ask God to show you where and how to serve.

Because the goal isn’t to feel gifted.

It’s to be useful.
