Faith That Really Believes

In Joshua 3, after wandering in the wilderness for 40 years, the Israelites are told to cross the Jordan River and to let the Priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant lead the way. The Israelites, not known for their great obedience, may have been a little apprehensive. The Jordan can be as wide as 100 feet and as deep as 10 feet. It was harvest time, and the river was swollen to flood stage. If they did make it across, the fortified city of Jericho was waiting for them on the other side. Yes, I bet they had their doubts.

God knew them too well. And as He often does, He made a provision. He would grow their faith…right before their eyes. The priests were told to hold the Ark above their heads and step into the Jordan. There were no gently sloping banks or places to make a gradual descent. When you stepped into the Jordan, you stepped off the bank, and you were all in. Chest high.

Real faith is like that. We decide to step off into the deep, trusting that God will keep our heads above water. Think back to your 10th birthday. You hoped you would get a birthday present, but you didn’t know what it could be. In the simplest of terms, faith is like that birthday present. We believe that God will guide us and hold us and rescue us…we just don’t know how He will do it.

The Israelites saw the water parted, and they crossed on dry ground. They did not leave the water the same as when they entered. They made a choice. They chose to believe.

So, will you dare to step off into the deep? Will you dare to believe God loves you enough to come in a dead run if you need Him? Will you have faith? Will you have faith that really believes?

Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. - Hebrews 11:1
