Trusting God

Do you ever struggle to trust God? Are there times you have more fear than faith? I confess there are moments my fear appears greater. Difficult circumstances cloud my vision from seeing what God is doing. If you can relate, take heart, you’re not alone. Today, I want to share an example of someone who had great faith in Jesus and still wrestled with doubt.

Jesus' cousin John is considered one of His greatest followers. Jesus describes him in Matthew 11:11, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John the Baptist (NLT). Yet, when John’s circumstances become challenging, he starts to doubt Jesus.

John spends his life telling everyone that Jesus is the Messiah. However, while in prison for this testimony, John begins to doubt whether it’s true. Negative circumstances sometimes cloud our vision of what God is doing around us. The prisons of fear, anxiety, depression, relational stress, and countless other challenges can cause us to doubt if God is still concerned about our situation.

So Jesus responds to John’s doubt:

Jesus told them, “Go back to John and tell him what you have heard and seen—the blind see, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor.” Matthew 11:4-5 (NLT)

Jesus wants John and his disciples to know that miracles are happening, lives are being changed, and hope is being restored. The work of the Messiah is taking place just as John predicted, even though it’s hard to see from his prison cell.

Though we may struggle with our faith in God, and our circumstances might not seem to improve, God is still at work! Today, ask God to help you see how He works in your circumstances. Then, trust that He is working even when you cannot see. He is still doing miracles.

Reflection:

What circumstance are you facing that is causing you to doubt God?

What are three ways you see God at work in this situation? (big or small ways)
