Following the Way of Jesus

Following the way of Jesus is not always easy or convenient. Today we will read one of the most simple, beautiful, difficult, and life-changing teachings of Jesus.

God loves us all just as we are - even if we are bitter, prideful, or rude. In this teaching, Jesus calls us to love others in the same way. We’re called to love even the person in our life who we cut off, canceled, or hate.

This might seem backward, weird, or even like a terrible idea. But Jesus lived this way, bringing peace, joy, and comfort to those around him. Jesus loved his enemies even while they were killing him, and because he didn’t fight back, he died. But the good news is that Jesus was raised from the dead! Jesus proved that love, even love for enemies, is the way to full and everlasting life!

Take 10 minutes to read this passage slowly, 2 or 3 times, and then reflect. Before you start, ask the Spirit of God to join you as you read. Ask God to help you trust that these words are good and full of life.

Matthew 5:38-48

Concerning Retaliation

38 ‘You have heard that it was said, “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” 39 But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; 40 and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; 41 and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile. 42 Give to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you.

Love for Enemies

43 ‘You have heard that it was said, “You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Reflection:

Think for a moment about a person or group that is an enemy in your heart. If you’re having trouble, ask the Spirit of God to bring a name to your mind. Maybe someone from school, church, or your family. Or maybe a group of people, such as a different team, race, or clique. Write down the emotions you feel when thinking of them.

Remembering that God loves them just as much as God loves you and the whole world, pray for them. Pray that they would have joy instead of pain. Pray for their good and not their downfall. Again, write down any thoughts and feelings you are having In this moment.

The word “perfect” in verse 48 is better translated as “complete” or “whole.” According to this teaching of Jesus, what would it look like for you to be made whole, as God is whole?
