When I Gaze Up at the Night Sky

Where do you most often and easily see God?

For me, it’s in staring up at the night sky, sprinkled with lights no accident of chaos could ever create and no human could ever count.

Staring up into that infinite, velvety blackness sends my soul to lifting up praises far too big for any words.

The wonder of it all—the wonder of the God who made it all—steals my breath away. And in spite of all the vastness, I know I am seen and known and endlessly, perfectly loved.

And so are you.

So, will you join me in a little wandering tonight? Will you step outside and stare up at the work of His fingers? And let’s praise the God who is not only able to call the stars by name (Psalm 147:4), but also loves to call us by name.

To Pray:

Lord, when I gaze up at the stars, I can’t begin to count them all. They stretch out—constellation after constellation, galaxy after galaxy, from infinity to eternity—into a vastness that is beyond anything I could ever imagine. You’ve placed each one precisely where You wanted it to be and called each one by its name.
In the darkness, the stars wink and blink out their never-ending message—a twinkling Morse code reaching to every corner of the globe that declares, “Our God is real and alive! He rules and He reigns!”
It would be so easy for me to feel small, even insignificant, amid all this vastness. A tiny speck on a tiny planet swirling around in one of Your many million galaxies.
But I don’t. I don’t feel small at all. I lift up my hands and this prayer and all my praise to You.
Because You call me by my name too.
Amen.
