When It’s Time to Be Still with God

Be still with God.

Am I the only one who struggles with that sometimes?

I confess that I feel this pressure inside me—largely self-imposed, I know—to be productive. It’s as if I need to justify my presence with productivity. But that’s not what God asks of us at all. Instead, God asks us to find our identity in Him, not in our busyness.

Which is probably why He commands us to “be still, and know that [He] is God” (Psalm 46:10 NIV). And then in the New Testament, Jesus invites us to come to Him and find rest in His presence (Matthew 11:28).

I’m learning that when I do take those moments to be still with Him, to rest in His presence, God is so faithful to step down and meet with me. To fill me with His peace and with this wonderful awareness of His presence. And it’s just the most wonderful thing to linger with Him in that holy space with my feet firmly planted here on earth while my heart and soul rest in the divine.

So, will join me for a moment—or more—to be still with God?

To Pray:

Help me step into your presence, Lord.
Away from the running and racing of this world.
To be still with You.
Stillness seems like it should be so simple to achieve: Just stop. But this world pulls at me, distracting me with everything it says I should be doing. It whispers the lie that I don’t have time for You. It lures me with ready-to-be-broken promises of “Later . . . later . . . later.” But we know how that goes, don’t we, God?
Silence the whispers of this world and chase away the distractions. Create in me a thirst for Your presence and a hunger for Your Word. Open my heart, and open my mind. Pour in the light and life of Your truth.
And as I sit here, seeking You, I claim that ancient-yet-unchanging promise: When I seek, You will be found.
Amen.
