Holy Spirit, give us strength to love sacrificially.

Sacrificial love is not natural to us. Sacrificial love is a supernatural Jesus inspired kind of love. On our own, our love often runs out when we feel tired, overlooked, or frustrated. But true love, the kind Paul describes in 1 Corinthians (1 Corinthians 13:7 NIV), is sustained by the Holy Spirit. It protects when it would be easier to withdraw, it trusts when doubt creeps in, it hopes even when circumstances feel heavy, and it perseveres when it would be simpler to give up. In marriage, this kind of love means showing up daily with a heart willing to serve, forgive, and keep choosing your spouse, even when it costs you something and even when it makes you uncomfortable.

My husband and I have been in a season of “hard” the last few years because of the nature of his job. It’s so easy in the midst of the chaos to feel like my job is harder, more demanding, more exhausting than his. It’s easy for resentment to creep in and for me to want to withdraw and give him the cold shoulder. It’s in those moments I have to be Spirit-led and sit with him for the hard conversations. I have to choose our marriage over my feelings, choose our relationship over my pride!

Today, we are praying that the Lord would be the strength we need to love our spouses sacrificially and live out 1 Corinthians 13:7!

Today's Prayer:

Dear Lord, help me to love the way that you love and serve the way that you serve. Instead of pulling away, help me to lean in! Give me the strength and courage to love sacrificially. Protect our hearts from becoming hard towards one another!

30 Scripture Based Prayers for Your Marriage

Bringing your marriage before the Lord is both powerful and redemptive. When two imperfect people stand on Scripture and invite God to strengthen their bond, they build a defense the enemy cannot break. What a gift to know God is for your marriage, and for you. These next 30 days are an invitation to declare his Word over your relationship and trust him with what only he can do: protect, grow, and fortify your marriage from the inside out.
