God, help us fulfill Your purpose for our marriage.

I recently listened to a sermon about position and purpose, and I’ve been chewing on it ever since, mainly because it applies to every part of my life.

My divorce turned into a redemption story that led me to a job at Awesome Marriage? Position and purpose. Years of infertility that opened the door to adoption and then a pregnancy soon after? Position and purpose. Coaching my children in cross country? Position and purpose. My marriage to my husband? Another position, but the same great purpose.

The Lord has positioned me alongside my husband (and in every other place) with a purpose far greater than my own satisfaction or happiness. He is sanctifying me. Calling me to serve rather than be served, to stay in the discomfort rather than escape to isolation, to lean into the hard conversations when my husband reminds me of who I am in Christ and what he’s called me to do.

The truth is, it’s only because of my purpose, to bring him glory, that my position has any meaning at all. Paul tells the Ephesians in Ephesians 2:10 (NIV) that we are his handiwork, created on purpose to do good works for him. Marriage gives us one more position to live out those good works on behalf of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

My prayer today is that we won’t just look for places outside our homes to do good, but that we would see our position within our marriage as one of the greatest opportunities to live out our purpose.

Lord, I’m so thankful you have purposed me and my marriage for something greater and more meaningful than self satisfaction! I pray that within our marriage, we would walk faithfully in the good works you have prepared for us. Give us eyes to see our marriage not just as a source of joy, but as a calling to glorify you. May our home be a place where your handiwork is evident, and where every decision reflects our desire to honor you. Amen.
