Growing Multigenerational Faithಮಾದರಿ

I read Hebrews 11:39-40, reflecting upon the legacy of faith these Old Testament figures were “commended for.” They didn’t live to see God’s promises. Scripture says God planned something better for us, which they would be a part of. And not only that, together we would be made “perfect.”
What is that “something better?” That “perfection?” It is something the legacy of a faithful life points to: God redeeming humanity to himself through his son, Jesus. The New Covenant.
My father’s life has been a legacy of faith. Preaching since 18 years old, at 90, he still offers pearls of God’s peace as humbly as his next breath. Recently, as I bemoaned the brokenness in the world, he gently encouraged, “For we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7, ESV). Then he pointed to the hope of Jesus, “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33b, ESV).
There is a future orientation to this faithful life God planned for us. When Jesus prayed for the unity of believers, he prayed for all, those who would later believe also. (John 17:20-21). That includes those who come after us.
I think of the legacy of the faithful in the Bible. Of the legacy my dad will leave. Then I reflect upon mine. How does my life point others to God’s amazing plan for “something better?” Do I live in such a way that others can see Jesus through me? In me?
What about you? Good or bad, we all have an impact. What is yours? What will your legacy of faith be?

Questions to Consider
- Who are the people God has put in your life?
- What kind of faith impact do you have? (Do people experience more of God’s love, truth, and grace having been with you?)
- How do you most wish to be remembered? What will it take to be that person?
Actions to Take
- Our witness is critical to our impact. Our motives are important to our authentic witness. Evaluate your actions, thoughts, and emotions. This is key to understanding what motivates your life.
- Write down your foundational life values. Ensure your lifestyle supports them.
- Ask God to examine your heart and reveal his truth to you.
Prayer to Make
Dear Lord, I ask that you examine my heart and reveal the ways you would have me grow. Help me to see the people in my life through your eternal legacy of love and grace. Help me live surrendered and faithfully pointing to you, so that those around me can know that “something better” too. In Jesus' name, Amen.
