Growing Multigenerational Faith

Legacy. Promise. Covenant. Generational impact of His Word. Spiritual inheritance.

These are words that come to mind when meditating on Isaiah 59:21 (NLT), which says, “And this is my covenant to them, says the Lord. “My Spirit will not leave them and neither will these words I have given you. They will be on your lips, and on the lips of your children and your children’s children forever. I, the Lord, have spoken.”

There are a multitude of promises and covenants that God lays out before us in scripture. God references Himself as the God of Abraham, Jacob, and Isaac (Exodus 3:6), to declare His desire to work through generations in families.

This passage speaks to a covenant that God is making with us and all future generations to come. It is a promise that His word will not return void, and it is a promise of the gift of the Holy Spirit. These two promises are unshakeable and are gifted to us through His grace.

Psalm 145:4 (NLT) says, “Let each generation tell its children of your mighty acts; let them proclaim your power.” We are called to carry the Word of God and walk by the Spirit, leaving a legacy of faith that echoes through generations- lighting the path for those who follow.

There is an invitation right now, wherever you are, to behold His goodness and ask the Holy Spirit how to build and leave a legacy today that is lasting and impactful to the next generation.

Questions to Consider:

  • What legacy or spiritual inheritance are you leaving for the next generation?
  • How can you grow in spiritual maturity to ensure God’s word is being passed down effectively and impactfully?

Actions to Take

  • Who is a part of your spiritual inheritance? Ask someone instrumental in your faith formation for ways to increase the richness of what you bring to your legacy.
  • Pray about your next step on your “legacy” journey. It may be starting one or continuing along the way. Then take the step in faith.

Prayer to Make

Lord, I thank you for the covenant promise your Word gives us. I know my faith is a gift, and I ask for your guidance and that of others, so that I can be a blessing as I proclaim your name to those whom you have given into my care. Amen.
