Uncuffed: Bulletproofing the Police Marriage

DAY 12 OF 40

# Got'cha! > “So then each of us will give an account of himself to God.” > ~ Romans 14:12 Part of strengthening your bulletproofed relationship involves adding layers of marital Kevlar through accountability. We know some people are resistant to this, but let’s look at it through a hero lens for success in marriage. Accountability is an honest reckoning of self-judgment. Your spouse should also be there to help monitor with an objective perspective and gentle, encouraging words. The negative connotation of accountability comes from associations to discipline. Back in grade school, on the job, civil and criminal codes, and in church, all we’ve ever known is the reactive nature of being held accountable. No wonder no one wants to hold themselves accountable. When applied in a negative “gotcha” after the fact, it loses its appeal and application for the sake of what good we’re working to accomplish. What if we instead looked at accountability in a positive light? If instead of it being a tool to retro-discover failures, we front-load success by clearly identifying the expectations ahead of time and then apply accountability measures as a means to progressively monitor and guide the entirety of the marriage journey. ### CALL TO ACTION: Create a list of proactive accountability measures and attach incentives to them. If accountability is required because one or both have fallen to sexual temptation, then make sharing all social media account passwords a measure to ensure ahead of time that you will not be tempted to send or accept potentially destructive messages.
