Who Is He? Who Are We?

DAY 19 OF 21

Today's reading is the story of the crucifixion of Jesus. This chapter mentions 15 different characters or groupings of people. Each plays a part important enough to be mentioned in John's account of the crucifixion. There is a reason each person is there and is described by John. As you read today, spend time empathizing with each one. Today's devotional is less about application and more about sitting with each character of the story. Here are some questions to ask and thoughts to sit with to get you started:

What was Pilate feeling? Why was he fearful in verse 8?

Why are the soldiers mocking Jesus?

What is Jesus feeling as they shout for His crucifixion?

Look at each statement from Jesus. What is the reason behind each statement?

What do we learn about John in verses 25-27? What do we see about Jesus’ care for His mother?

What are Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus thinking as they care for Jesus’ body?

When you are done examining these characters, reread the story and see the interaction between each character. See how Jesus acts and responds. Watch as the most important event in history unfolds.
