Who Is He? Who Are We?

DAY 16 OF 21

In John 16, Jesus reveals both His divine identity and the nature of our identity as His followers. As He prepares to leave His disciples, He speaks not as another man predicting events, but as the divine Son who knows all things and holds the future in His hands. It is a wonderful insight to see how the God of the universe, still comes down to our level to show us that He sees us and understands our emotions. In this aspect, He is preparing His followers' hearts, even though He didn’t have to! Furthermore, He promises the coming of the Holy Spirit, who will guide believers into all truth, convict the world of sin, and glorify Christ. This moment shows us who He truly is, not only a teacher or prophet, but the eternal God who shares perfect unity with the Father and the Spirit. His words carry divine authority, comfort, and foresight.

Christ’s divinity is revealed in His control over what is to come. He knows the disciples will face sorrow, persecution, and confusion. Yet, He also promises that their grief will turn to joy, just as pain in childbirth gives way to new life. Jesus is not distant from suffering; He actually steps into it and faces the cross to conquer sin and death.

So who are we in this passage? We are His followers, weak, fearful, and often uncertain, yet deeply loved and chosen to share His victory. Jesus acknowledges the disciples' failures: “You will be scattered, each to your own home.” Still, He does not reject them. Instead, He reassures them of peace through Him. The Lord tells us throughout the entire Bible that our peace is not and should not be defined by circumstances or the world. Rather, peace is a gift from God and should therefore be consistent and constant. Our identity, therefore, is not defined by our failures but by our connection to the One who overcomes. We are not left as orphans; we are empowered by the Spirit He sends. We are witnesses, vessels through whom His truth and love are made known in a world that often opposes Him. Christ is the divine victor, and we are redeemed and His children through and in His triumph. Our peace, courage, and identity are rooted in who He is, the Son of God who reigns even when the world feels chaotic. When we feel like the world is shaking our identity, we can turn to Him and realize His word is truth and is the final say, so we have nothing to worry about.

Application:

1. Do you live with confidence that Christ has already overcome the world? Or do fear and worry often shape your identity?

2. When trials do come, where do you seek peace? Temporary relief or the lasting peace Jesus offers?

3. Do you truly see yourself as someone who belongs to Christ, or do you still let the world define who you are?
