DAY 3 OF 20

The first promise of redemption

Over 20 years ago now... I remember watching The Passion of the Christ at the movies with my Bible study group. What a movie. One of the many iconic scenes in the film was Jesus crushing the head of the snake with His heel. It was a powerful moment that still sends a shiver through me and sends tears to my eyes. I heard of a group of pastors who went to a screening of the movie and in this scene they all cheered.

This verse is significant and considered the first Gospel or the first prophesy where we hear God’s promise of redemption spoken even in the midst of humanity’s fall. After Adam and Eve disobeyed God, sin and death entered the world. Yet God, in His mercy, immediately pointed to a coming Saviour: ‘He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.’ Here, God declares that the offspring of the woman would one day defeat the serpent, Satan himself.

In this season of waiting, longing and hope, as we prepare to celebrate Christ’s birth, we remember that His coming was not random – it was the fulfilment of this very first promise. Jesus, born of a woman, came into the world to undo the curse of sin and death. At the cross, Satan struck His heel – Christ suffered and died – but through His resurrection, Jesus crushed the serpent’s head, breaking the power of sin once and for all.

Even in our brokenness, God provides hope. Christ has come, Christ has conquered, and Christ will come again to complete His victory. In Him, we find redemption promised, fulfilled and secured.

About this Plan

Advent

“This Christmas season let’s remember that God’s promises are not like ours – fragile and sometimes forgotten – but are firm, fulfilled and forever. In every wrapped gift, flickering Christmas tree light and sung carol, may we see a reflection of the ultimate gift: Jesus, the righteous branch – our everlasting hope.” (The Promise of a Righteous Branch – Robbie Parkin)
