Bible Case Files, English Part 1

DAY 3 OF 7

The Case of the Villain's Visit, Case Closed.

Led by the Holy Spirit, Jesus left the familiar towns and villages and ventured into the barren wilderness near the Jordan River. For forty days, He fasted and prayed—choosing to spend this sacred time in total dependence on His Father. The sun beat down, the nights were cold, and His body grew weak. Then, at His most physically vulnerable moment, the enemy arrived.

Satan, the father of lies, came with three temptations. First, he pointed to the stones scattered around and suggested Jesus turn them into bread. Then, he offered Him the kingdoms of the world in exchange for worship. Finally, he urged Jesus to throw Himself from the temple’s highest point to “prove” His identity.

Each time, Jesus answered—not with debate, not with His own opinion, but with Scripture: “It is written…” The Word of God was His defense. And each time, Satan’s attack failed.

Jesus experienced the full severity of these temptations just as any human would—hunger, weariness, fame, or the pull toward an easier way. Yet He was also the Son of God, and His divine authority gave Him power over sin. That same power is available to every believer through the Holy Spirit. We are not left to fight the enemy in our own strength; God’s Spirit and the Word of God equip us to resist and stand firm.

This account in Matthew 4 reminds us of something else we must never forget: we have a real enemy. He is not a myth, not a symbol of “bad things,” but a real spiritual being whose goal is to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). His tactics may not involve standing face-to-face with us in the desert, but they are just as targeted.

So what about you? What temptations does the enemy dangle before you? Is it discouragement, whispering that you’re not enough? Is it compromise, promising quick success if you just bend the rules? Is it distraction, keeping you so busy you have no time for God?

Follow Jesus’ example. Fill your heart and mind with God’s truth. Speak it out loud. Stand firm in the Spirit’s power. And when the enemy strikes, let your answer be the same: “It is written…”

The Case of the Burning Water

It started like a high-stakes contest—two teams, one challenge, and bragging rights on the line. But this was no game. The turning point came with a move no one saw coming, and the crowd would never forget it. Can you guess which Bible story is behind The Case of the Burning Water?
