ダビデの言ったことを聞いて、サウルに告げる者があったので、サウルはダビデを召し寄せた。 ダビデはサウルに言った。「あの男のことで、だれも気を落としてはなりません。僕が行って、あのペリシテ人と戦いましょう。」 サウルはダビデに答えた。「お前が出てあのペリシテ人と戦うことなどできはしまい。お前は少年だし、向こうは少年のときから戦士だ。」 しかし、ダビデは言った。「僕は、父の羊を飼う者です。獅子や熊が出て来て群れの中から羊を奪い取ることがあります。 そのときには、追いかけて打ちかかり、その口から羊を取り戻します。向かって来れば、たてがみをつかみ、打ち殺してしまいます。 わたしは獅子も熊も倒してきたのですから、あの無割礼のペリシテ人もそれらの獣の一匹のようにしてみせましょう。彼は生ける神の戦列に挑戦したのですから。」 ダビデは更に言った。「獅子の手、熊の手からわたしを守ってくださった主は、あのペリシテ人の手からも、わたしを守ってくださるにちがいありません。」サウルはダビデに言った。「行くがよい。主がお前と共におられるように。」
