ダビデは翌朝早く起き、羊の群れを番人に任せ、エッサイが命じたものを担いで出かけた。彼が幕営に着くと、兵は鬨の声をあげて、戦線に出るところだった。 イスラエル軍とペリシテ軍は、向かい合って戦列を敷いていた。 ダビデは持参したものを武具の番人に託すと、戦列の方へ走って行き、兄たちの安否を尋ねた。 彼が兄たちと話しているとき、ガトのペリシテ人で名をゴリアトという戦士が、ペリシテ軍の戦列から現れて、いつもの言葉を叫んだのでダビデはこれを聞いた。 イスラエルの兵は皆、この男を見て後退し、甚だしく恐れた。 イスラエル兵は言った。「あの出て来た男を見たか。彼が出て来るのはイスラエルに挑戦するためだ。彼を討ち取る者があれば、王様は大金を賜るそうだ。しかも、王女をくださり、更にその父の家にはイスラエルにおいて特典を与えてくださるということだ。」 ダビデは周りに立っている兵に言った。「あのペリシテ人を打ち倒し、イスラエルからこの屈辱を取り除く者は、何をしてもらえるのですか。生ける神の戦列に挑戦するとは、あの無割礼のペリシテ人は、一体何者ですか。」 兵士たちはダビデに先の言葉を繰り返し、「あの男を討ち取る者はこのようにしてもらえる」と言った。
