13 “You give them something to eat,” he told them.
“We have no more than five loaves#Mt 16:9; Mk 8:19 and two fish,” they said, “unless we go and buy food for all these people.” 14(For about five thousand men were there.)
Then he told his disciples, “Have them sit down#9:14 Lit them recline in groups of about fifty each.” 15They did what he said, and had them all sit down. 16Then he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven,#Mk 7:34; Jn 11:41; 17:1 he blessed and broke them.#Mt 26:26; Mk 8:7; 14:22; Lk 24:30 He kept giving them to the disciples to set before the crowd. 17Everyone ate and was filled. The Transfiguration
28About eight days after this conversation,#Mt 17:1–8; Mk 9:2–8 he took along Peter, John, and James#Mk 14:33; Lk 8:51 and went up on the mountain to pray.#Mt 14:23; Lk 3:21; 5:16; 6:12; 9:18 29As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed,#Mk 16:12 and his clothes became dazzling white.#Ps 104:2; Dn 7:9; Mt 28:3 30Suddenly, two men were talking with him — Moses and Elijah. 31They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish in Jerusalem.
32Peter and those with him were in a deep sleep,#9:32 Lit were weighed down with sleep#Gn 2:21; 15:12; 1Sm 26:12; Dn 8:18; 10:9; Mt 26:43 and when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men who were standing with him. 33As the two men were departing from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master,#Lk 5:5; 9:49 it’s good for us to be here. Let’s set up three shelters: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah” — not knowing what he was saying.#Mk 14:40
34While he was saying this, a cloud appeared and overshadowed#Lk 1:35; Ac 5:15 them. They became afraid as they entered the cloud. 35Then a voice came from the cloud,#Ex 24:15–16; 2Pt 1:16–18 saying, “This is my Son,#Ex 4:23; Ps 2:7; Hs 11:1; Ac 13:33; Heb 1:5 the Chosen One;#9:35 Other mss read the Beloved#Ps 89:3; Is 42:1; Lk 23:35 listen to him!” #Ac 3:22

The Power of Jesus over a Demon
37The next day,#Mt 17:14–18; Mk 9:14–27 when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. 38Just then a man from the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, because he’s my only child.#Lk 7:12 39A spirit seizes him; suddenly he shrieks, and it throws him into convulsions until he foams at the mouth; severely bruising him, it scarcely ever leaves him. 40I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn’t.”#Lk 9:1; 10:17
41Jesus replied, “You unbelieving and perverse#9:41 Or corrupt, or perverted, or twisted; Dt 32:5 generation,#Php 2:15 how long will I be with you and put up with you?#Jn 14:9 Bring your son here.”
42As the boy was still approaching, the demon knocked him down and threw him into severe convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy,#Zch 3:2; Mt 8:26; Mk 1:25; Lk 4:35,39; Jd 9 and gave him back to his father.#Lk 7:15 43And they were all astonished at the greatness of God.#2Pt 1:16
The Second Prediction of His Death
While everyone was amazed at all the things he was doing,#Mt 17:22–23; Mk 9:30–32 he told his disciples, 44“Let these words sink in:#9:44 Lit “Put these words in your ears The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.”#Lk 9:22
45But they did not understand this statement;#Mk 6:52; Lk 2:50; 18:34; 24:25; Jn 10:6; 12:16; 16:17–19 it was concealed from them so that they could not grasp it,#Lk 18:34; 24:16 and they were afraid to ask him about it.
Who Is the Greatest?
46An argument started among them about who was the greatest of them.#Mt 18:1–5; Mk 9:33–37; Lk 22:24 47But Jesus, knowing their inner thoughts,#9:47 Lit the thoughts of their hearts#Mt 9:4 took a little child and had him stand next to him. 48He told them, “Whoever welcomes#9:48 Or receives, throughout the verse this little child in my name welcomes me. And whoever welcomes me welcomes him who sent me.#Mt 10:40,42; Lk 10:16; Jn 13:20 For whoever is least among you — this one is great.”#Lk 22:26
In His Name
49John responded,#Mk 9:38–40 “Master, we saw someone driving out demons in your name,#Mt 7:22; 12:27; Mk 16:17; Lk 10:17; Ac 19:13 and we tried to stop him because he does not follow us.”#Nm 11:28
50 “Don’t stop him,” Jesus told him, “because whoever is not against you is for you.”#9:50 Other mss read against us is for us#Mt 12:30; Lk 11:23

55But he turned and rebuked them,#9:55–56 Other mss add and said, “You don’t know what kind of spirit you belong to. 56 For the Son of Man did not come to destroy people’s lives but to save them,” 56and they went to another village.
Following Jesus
57As they were traveling on the road someone said to him,#Mt 8:19–22 “I will follow you wherever you go.”
58Jesus told him, “Foxes have dens, and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” 59Then he said to another, “Follow me.”
“Lord,” he said, “first let me go bury my father.”
60But he told him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and spread the news of the kingdom of God.”#Lk 8:1; 9:2; 16:16
61Another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but first let me go and say good-bye to those at my house.”#1Kg 19:20
62But Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”
