The life-giving leader’s conviction is to build the kingdom. In today’s passage, Esther 4:16, Esther is presented with a leadership opportunity that requires real sacrifice and genuine commitment. Mordecai is pleading with her to go to the king and make a request to save her people. An uninvited appearance, however, was costly. If someone came before the king without permission, it could mean death (Esther 4:11). This was a criminal penalty because this act was “against the law.” 

Esther did not want to become a criminal, but she did want to become a leader. She embraces her identity as a leader. She makes the commitment and is willing to sacrifice for all of her people. 

She demonstrates determination and is full of conviction. She declares, “I will go to the king, even though…” She is willing to make a sacrifice for the greater good even though there are hard consequences. Leaders must be willing to pay the price to build the kingdom no matter what. Esther knew that building the kingdom for the good of others outweighed anything she possessed, even her life. 

She cries out, “And if I perish, I perish.” This demonstrates her conviction and commitment to give her life for the people. What are we willing to give up to build the kingdom? Are we willing to give up our time, our resources, our money, or our comfort? If we are going to reach our leadership potential, then we must settle in our hearts our conviction to build the kingdom. Let’s make a commitment to become sacrificial leaders that build the kingdom no matter what!
