5 Spiritual Needs You Must Not Ignore

DAY 2 OF 7

The Need to Be Born Again

In John 3:1–21, we find the story of a man named Nicodemus—a Pharisee and member of the Sanhedrin—who has a profound conversation with Jesus.

There are many rich insights we could draw from this passage, but today I want to focus on one key verse: John 3:7.

Before reaching that verse, we see a dialogue begin between Jesus and Nicodemus. Jesus places strong emphasis on being born again. In verse 7, He reaffirms it for the third time, and here’s something important: the Greek word used is δεῖ (dei), which means “it is necessary.” In other words: It is necessary to be born again.

Yesterday we reflected on what “need” really means—something essential, impossible to do without. This conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus is often quoted in church, but let’s be honest: it doesn’t matter how much we think we know theoretically.

Nicodemus knew a lot. But even with all his knowledge, Jesus told him it wasn’t enough. He couldn’t truly grasp or experience the heavenly simply by understanding doctrine. What he needed was a change in the depths of his heart.

And that’s the same invitation for us today.

John 1:12 says:

“ He gave the right to become children of God.”

Yes, we are children of God—but children must know their Father intimately. And knowing God takes time. As we walk this journey, we’ll have to let go of habits or ways of thinking that don’t bring us closer to Him.

Being born again is about transformation.

And just like our physical needs—breathing, eating, sleeping—this spiritual need is just as vital for our growth and eternal life.

Take time today to pray. Open your heart to God and tell Him, “I want to be born again. Teach me how to walk in Your ways.”

Let me leave you with this:

Being born again is essential—because God isn’t someone we imagine, He is someone we come to know.
