Semuanya dimulai seperti yang ditulis oleh Nabi Yesaya. “Aku mengirim utusan-Ku di depan-Mu, dan dia akan mempersiapkan dunia bagi kedatangan-Mu.” “Ada orang berseru-seru di padang gurun, ‘Siapkanlah jalan bagi Tuhan; luruskanlah jalan yang akan dilalui-Nya.’ ” Utusan itu ialah Yohanes Pembaptis. Ia hidup di padang gurun dan mengajarkan bahwa semua orang harus bertobat supaya Allah mengampuni mereka, dan mereka harus dibaptiskan sebagai pernyataan kepada umum bahwa mereka telah mengambil keputusan untuk meninggalkan dosa.
