Two rebels were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!” In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ” In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him. From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”). When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.” Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.” And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people. When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”

Vè twazè, Jezi rele byen fò, li di: — Eli, Eli lema sabaktani? (Ki vle di: Bondye, Bondye, poukisa ou lage m konsa?) Nan moun ki te la yo, genyen ki tande l'ap pale. Yo di: — Men l'ap rele Eli. Lamenm, yonn nan yo kouri al pran yon eponj, li tranpe l nan vinèg, li mete l nan pwent yon gòl wozo, li lonje l bò bouch Jezi ba l bwè. Men, lòt moun yo di: — Tann non, monchè. Ann wè si Eli ap vin delivre li. Jezi bay yon gwo rèl ankò, epi li mouri. Menm lè a, rido tanp lan chire fè de moso, depi anwo jouk anba. Latè tranble. Wòch fann. Tonm yo louvri. Les soldats clouent aussi deux bandits sur des croix à côté de Jésus, l’un à sa droite et l’autre à sa gauche. Les gens qui passent par là secouent la tête et ils insultent Jésus en disant : « Tu voulais détruire le temple et le reconstruire en trois jours. Eh bien, si tu es le Fils de Dieu, sauve-toi toi-même et descends de la croix ! » Les chefs des prêtres avec les maîtres de la loi et les anciens se moquent de Jésus. Ils disent : « Il a sauvé les autres, mais il ne peut pas se sauver lui-même ! C’est le roi d’Israël ! Maintenant, il n’a qu’à descendre de la croix, alors nous croirons en lui. Il a fait confiance à Dieu. Eh bien, si Dieu l’aime, il n’a qu’à le sauver maintenant ! En effet, cet homme a dit : “Je suis Fils de Dieu.” » Même les bandits qu’on a cloués sur des croix à côté de Jésus l’insultent de la même façon. À partir de midi, il fait nuit dans tout le pays jusqu’à trois heures de l’après-midi. Vers trois heures, Jésus crie très fort : « Éli, Éli, lema sabaktani ? » Cela veut dire : « Mon Dieu, mon Dieu, pourquoi m’as-tu abandonné ? » Parmi ceux qui sont là, certains l’entendent et disent : « Il appelle Élie ! » Aussitôt, l’un d’eux part en courant. Il prend une éponge et la trempe dans du vinaigre. Il met l’éponge au bout d’un roseau et la présente à Jésus pour qu’il boive. Mais les autres disent : « Attends ! Nous allons voir si Élie vient le sauver ! » De nouveau, Jésus pousse un grand cri et il meurt. À ce moment-là, le grand rideau qui est dans le temple se déchire en deux morceaux, depuis le haut jusqu’en bas. La terre tremble, les rochers se fendent. Les tombes s’ouvrent, et les corps de beaucoup d’amis de Dieu, qui étaient morts, se réveillent. Plus tard, quand Jésus se réveille de la mort, ils sortent des tombes. Ils entrent dans Jérusalem, la ville sainte, et ils se montrent à beaucoup de gens. L’officier romain et les soldats qui gardent Jésus avec lui voient que la terre tremble. Ils voient aussi tout ce qui se passe. Alors ils ont très peur et ils disent : « Vraiment, cet homme était Fils de Dieu ! »

Deux brigands furent crucifiés en même temps que lui, l’un à sa droite, l’autre à sa gauche. Ceux qui passaient par là lui lançaient des insultes en secouant la tête, et criaient : Hé, toi qui démolis le Temple et qui le reconstruis en trois jours, sauve-toi toi-même. Si tu es le Fils de Dieu, descends de la croix ! De même, les chefs des prêtres se moquaient de lui, avec les spécialistes de la Loi et les responsables du peuple, en disant : Dire qu’il a sauvé les autres, et qu’il est incapable de se sauver lui-même ! C’est ça le roi d’Israël ? Qu’il descende donc de la croix ; alors nous croirons en lui ! Il a mis sa confiance en Dieu. Eh bien, si Dieu trouve son plaisir en lui, qu’il le délivre ! N’a-t-il pas dit : « Je suis le Fils de Dieu » ? Les brigands crucifiés avec lui l’insultaient, eux aussi, de la même manière. A partir de midi, et jusqu’à trois heures de l’après-midi, le pays entier fut plongé dans l’obscurité. Vers trois heures, Jésus cria d’une voix forte : Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani ? ce qui veut dire : Mon Dieu, mon Dieu, pourquoi m’as-tu abandonné ? En entendant ces paroles, quelques-uns de ceux qui étaient là disaient : Il appelle Elie ! L’un d’entre eux courut aussitôt prendre une éponge, qu’il imbiba de vinaigre et piqua au bout d’un roseau. Il la présenta à Jésus pour qu’il boive, quand les autres lui dirent : Attends ! On va bien voir si Elie vient le délivrer. A ce moment, Jésus poussa de nouveau un grand cri et rendit l’esprit. Et voici qu’au même instant, le rideau du Temple se déchira en deux, de haut en bas ; la terre trembla, les rochers se fendirent. Des tombes s’ouvrirent et les corps de beaucoup d’hommes fidèles à Dieu qui étaient morts ressuscitèrent. Ils quittèrent leurs tombeaux et, après la résurrection de Jésus, ils entrèrent dans la ville sainte où beaucoup de personnes les virent. En voyant le tremblement de terre et tout ce qui se passait, l’officier romain et les soldats qui gardaient Jésus furent saisis d’épouvante et dirent : Cet homme était vraiment le Fils de Dieu !
