DAY 4

Omnipotent

God is all-powerful. There is nothing too hard for him. No words can be uttered by God that will be devoid of power; when God speaks, all of creation does his bidding (Isaiah 55:11).

The prefix omni means “all,” so when we speak of his omnipotence, we are speaking of his all-powerful (or all “potent”) nature. This particular concept is difficult for us to wrap our minds around because there are, of course, things God cannot do. God cannot act contrary to his nature, which means he cannot lie (Titus 1:2). Also, he cannot do logically contradictory things, like creating a rock so big that he cannot lift. (When we start asking these kinds of questions of God’s all-powerful nature, we do well to revisit his incomprehensibility!)

So what do we mean when we say God is omnipotent? When we say God is all-powerful, we are saying that God has total control over all things. The Bible teaches us that he has control over the small elements of our daily lives, like the hairs that grow on our heads and the sparrow that falls from the sky (Matthew 6:26-30). And the grandest reality of our known world, like establishing kings and rulers (Isaiah 44:28) and deciding which ones will rise and fall (Psalm 33:10-11). In God’s all-powerful nature, he knits together human DNA in the womb (Psalm 139:13-16) and saves sinners from eternal death, extending them his powerful grace and saving lives in his Son (Ephesians 2:8-10). There is nothing beyond God’s power; no act is too difficult for him. As he says through the mouth of a prophet: “Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh. Is anything too hard for me?” (Jer. 32:27).
