Becoming a Compassionate Woman: 6 Biblical Examples Primjer

You: A Compassionate Woman
All the women we’ve met in the past five days have something in common: they were called by God to show compassion.
- Abigail protected her people while providing for David, the future king of Israel and forefather of Jesus.
- Tabitha’s acts of compassion resulted in a legacy that inspired many people to turn to God.
- The widow of Zarephath fed Elijah, one of the greatest prophets of the Bible.
- The Shunammite woman set up a guest room for Elishaso so he could focus on teaching others about God.
- Ruth stuck by her mother-in-law’s side, received the food they needed to survive through favor and bore a son who would be a critical ancestor of Jesus.
You’re called to show compassion to others too. When we see others who are poor, lacking basic necessities, or struggling in any way, we’re called to show mercy through compassionate action. And with God, there’s no way of knowing just how many lives each act of compassion will touch.
“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you”(Ephesians 4:32, NIV).
“Be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble”(1 Peter 3:8, NIV).
How to Act Compassionately
How can you act compassionately today? Each day, we’re presented with many opportunities to show compassion; we just have to open our eyes and learn to see others.
At Compassion, we get to see love in action daily. Every day, millions of children in poverty around the world experience compassion from God’s family as they participate in Compassion International’s Child Sponsorship Program.
At child development centers run by our frontline church partners, children in poverty receive health care, nutrition support, mentorship, and love. They also hear the gospel and have the opportunity to give their lives to Christ.
When you sponsor a child, you’re personally connected with a boy or girl who will know your name, cherish the thought that you care for them, and benefit from your compassion.
Through your prayers, financial support, and letters, you can show a child in poverty how valuable they are and how much God cares.

Being compassionate means seeing the suffering of others and taking action to help. Compassion may look like comforting someone going through loss, cooking a delicious meal for someone in need, or simply sharing an encouraging word. The Bible is full of compassionate women we can learn from. In the next six days, you’ll meet some of these incredible women and learn how you can follow their example.
