Abraham received a big promise from God, “Your offspring will be more than the stars in the sky.”

Counting the stars in the sky is like counting grains of sand on the beach. Have you ever tried to count sand? Holding it in your hand, if you try to count each grain that falls, you’ll quickly discover it’s nearly impossible. The promise from God to Abraham seemed impossible. It was BOLD, DRASTIC, INCOMPREHENSIBLE. And yet, Abraham trusted the promise, and God counted Abraham’s trust as righteousness.

We often equate righteousness with actions – doing the right thing, saying the right thing, having integrity. While that can play a part, that’s not what God is after here. The righteousness that God credited Abraham with wasn’t based on Abraham’s actions, but his faith - his confidence in the Promise-Giver.

Abraham had faith – faith that God is who He says He is and He will do what He says He will do.
