May 23 – Context in Scripture Interpretation
Context refers to the surrounding verses, chapters, and overall message in which a Scripture is found. No verse stands alone. Every passage must be understood within its literary, historical, and doctrinal setting.
This matters because context preserves meaning. It prevents misinterpretation and ensures that Scripture is understood as intended. Proper context brings clarity and accuracy to interpretation.
When context is ignored, verses are easily misused. People extract statements and assign meanings that were never intended. This leads to error, confusion, and sometimes false doctrine.
DAILY EXERCISE
Take a familiar verse.
Read at least 10 verses before and after it, and write what you now understand better.
PRAYER
Father, teach me to understand Your Word in context. Let me not misinterpret Scripture. I pray for believers, leaders, students, and families across Nigeria that they will grow in accurate understanding. Lord, we ask that across nations, Your Word will be rightly divided. Strengthen the Church worldwide in sound interpretation.
CONFESSION
I understand Scripture in context. I interpret God’s Word with clarity and accuracy.
