Day 8: Wait for It
When Jesus told His disciples, “It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you” (John 16:7, NIV), they must have struggled to believe Him. How could anything be better than having Jesus physically present? Yet Jesus was pointing them toward the power and presence of the Holy Spirit—a gift worth waiting for.
The Spirit would not just walk beside them; He would live within them—guiding, convicting, comforting, and empowering them to carry out the mission of God. And that promise still stands for us. But like the disciples, we must pause and wait for it.
The Spirit convicts us, but not to condemn us. “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1, NIV). Conviction draws us closer to Jesus, showing us where change is needed and offering the grace to grow. He guides us, just as Isaiah wrote: “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it’” (Isaiah 30:21, NIV). And He comforts us with His unshakable presence: “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth” (John 14:16-17, ESV).
In Acts 8, Peter and John traveled to Samaria to pray for new believers, “that they might receive the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them” (Acts 8:15-16, NIV). They understood that following Jesus without being filled with His Spirit would leave them powerless. The same is true today—our strength, wisdom, and courage flow from Him.
But waiting doesn’t come naturally. We want quick answers, instant direction, and immediate relief. Yet the Spirit’s timing is perfect, and His arrival is worth the pause. Waiting creates space for our desires to align with God’s, for our hearts to be softened, and for our ears to be tuned to His voice. It is often in the waiting that God does His deepest work in us.
When we finally receive what we’ve been waiting for—whether it’s guidance, peace, strength, or clarity—it comes with the unmistakable mark of the Spirit. And when He fills us, we’re never the same. His presence gives us the courage to step into the unknown, the power to resist temptation, and the boldness to live and speak the truth of the gospel.
Waiting on the Spirit is not passive—it’s active expectation. It’s a daily readiness to hear His voice, follow His lead, and receive His power. When we pause to wait, we are filled with the very presence of God, and that changes everything.
Reflection:
Where in your life do you need to pause and wait for the Holy Spirit’s direction? How might your decisions, relationships, and outlook change if you first waited for His filling?
