DAY 14 OF 14

Day 14: When the Ground Shifts Beneath You

Life rarely announces its storms. One day, you’re going through your normal routines, and the next, a phone call, a diagnosis, or a sudden loss changes everything. “You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes” (James 4:14, NIV). When the ground shifts beneath you, the illusion of control disappears, and you realize how fragile life truly is.

For the apostle Paul, weakness wasn’t something to hide—it was the very place where God’s power shone brightest:

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. —2 Corinthians 12:9-10 (NIV)

When circumstances feel uncertain, we cling to the truth that “he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:6, NIV). God’s work in us doesn’t stop because life gets hard; often, it deepens. And when the fear of the unknown creeps in, we remember: “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21, NIV). Life or death, healing or hardship—Christ is the treasure either way.

Shifting ground is an invitation to trust God more fully: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6, NIV). Trust doesn’t mean we understand—it means we lean on the One who does.

When the ground moves under your feet, it’s natural to want stability as fast as possible. But sometimes God uses those very moments to reshape the foundation you’re standing on. What once felt unshakable may crumble—but only so He can replace it with something stronger, rooted in His promises rather than in your own strength. Seasons of shaking can become seasons of refining, where the temporary is stripped away, and the eternal comes into focus.

And here’s the hope we hold: no matter how fierce the storm, God’s presence is never absent. He stands with you in the fire, walks with you through the valley, and whispers peace over the chaos. The ground may shift, but the Rock beneath it never will.

Reflection:
Where is your ground shifting right now? How can you invite God’s strength into your weakness and trust His steady hand to guide your steps?
