Day 10: Keeping Sabbath
In Israel, Sabbath isn’t just a religious observance—it’s a national rhythm. From Friday sunset to Saturday nightfall, life slows. Streets quiet. Shops close. Families gather around candlelit tables, sharing challah bread and blessings. Even hotel elevators in Jerusalem shift to “Shabbat mode,” stopping on every floor so no one has to press a button. For twenty-four hours, the pace of life changes, and the air carries the peace of Shabbat shalom.
Sabbath is God’s invitation to pause. It’s not about rules or guilt—it’s about freedom. “There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his” (Hebrews 4:9-10, NIV). This is more than physical rest; it’s a release from striving, from the endless effort to prove our worth. Jesus said, “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36, NIV). Sabbath reminds us that our value comes from being His, not from how much we get done.
Isaiah paints a beautiful picture of Sabbath’s reward:
“If you watch your step on the Sabbath and don’t use my holy day for personal advantage, if you treat the Sabbath as a day of joy, GOD’s holy day as a celebration, if you honor it by refusing ‘business as usual,’ making money, running here and there—Then you’ll be free to enjoy GOD! Oh, I’ll make you ride high and soar above it all.” —Isaiah 58:13-14 (MSG)
Keeping Sabbath is an act of rebellion in a culture addicted to hustle. It’s choosing to believe that God can run the world without our constant input. It’s sharpening the axe instead of swinging until we collapse. It’s letting Him refresh our souls so our work, relationships, and joy are fuller and richer.
You may not be able to start with a full day. That’s okay. Begin with a Sabbath hour. Unplug. Worship. Enjoy a slow meal. Go for a walk. Laugh with family. The point isn’t perfection—it’s presence.
When we honor the Sabbath, we are practicing trust. We are declaring with our actions that God’s provision is enough, that our worth is not tied to productivity, and that life is richer when it flows at His pace. Sabbath reminds us that the world keeps spinning even when we step back. And perhaps that’s one of the greatest freedoms it offers—the permission to rest without fear of falling behind.
Over time, this rhythm of stopping to delight in God reshapes us. Our anxiety loosens its grip, our relationships deepen, our faith grows stronger, and our joy becomes more rooted. Sabbath isn’t an interruption to life—it’s the well from which we draw the strength to truly live it.
Sabbath isn’t retreat. It’s resistance. It’s a weekly reminder to stop carrying so much and let God carry you.
Reflection:
What would it look like for you to begin—or deepen—a Sabbath rhythm? What one step could you take this week to pause and enjoy God’s presence?
