DAY 3 OF 14

Day 3: Rebel With a Pause

Pauses are everywhere—woven into language, music, nature, and even history. They may seem small, but they carry incredible weight. A pause can clarify, heal, and prepare. It can heighten anticipation or create space for the most important thing to be heard. And when it comes to the life of faith, pauses are not interruptions; they are invitations.

From the very beginning of Scripture, we see God using a pause. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty… and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters” (Genesis 1:1-2, NIV). Before a single word was spoken, before light flooded the darkness, the Spirit paused—hovering, waiting, ready. Creation itself was birthed out of a moment of stillness.

Jesus also knew the power of the pause. During His trial, “The chief priests accused him of many things… But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed” (Mark 15:3-5, NIV). That silence spoke louder than any defense. It was a pause filled with trust in His Father’s plan, a holy resistance to the pressure to prove Himself.

We’re called into pauses, too. At the Lord’s Table, we are told, “Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup” (1 Corinthians 11:28, NIV). This is not a quick, polite glance inward—it’s an intentional moment to stop, reflect, confess, and remember the One whose sacrifice makes the meal possible.

And in the Psalms, the pause is sometimes named directly: “You are my hiding place; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with shouts of deliverance. Selah” (Psalm 32:7, ESV). Selah is the reminder to stop and let truth sink in—to not rush past the reality of God’s protection and care.

Pauses don’t always feel productive. Sometimes they even feel like we’re falling behind. But in God’s kingdom, they are deeply rebellious acts—refusing to be defined by constant output, making space to hear His voice, and choosing peace over panic.

What if your pause today became the turning point in your week? What if the most important thing you do is the thing that looks least urgent on your to-do list? The rebellion of pauses is about trusting that God is working, even when you are still.

Reflection:
Where do you need to intentionally press pause this week? Is there a moment in your day you can guard—not to get something done, but to be still with God?
