He Drew Near: A Christmas Journey of Hope and Presence

DAY 5 OF 12

The Light in the Darkness

When John talks about Jesus, he doesn’t start with the manger. He starts with the beginning — the very beginning. “In the beginning was the Word...” (John 1:1). And that Word, he says, is light. A light that shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it.

That’s good news, especially when life feels heavy or confusing. Jesus didn’t avoid the dark places — he entered them. He came as light to reveal truth, to heal brokenness and to guide us into peace.

Isaiah spoke of this too, centuries before: “Arise, shine, for your light has come” (Isaiah 60:1). That promise was fulfilled in a person. Jesus is the light we all need, not just to see clearly but to truly live.

And now, as his followers, we carry his light. We reflect his presence wherever we go — into hard conversations, messy relationships or painful places.

Reflection Question:

What area in your life (or someone else’s) needs the light of Jesus today?

Prayer:

Jesus, you are the light in every darkness. Shine in us and through us. Help us carry your light into places that need healing, truth and hope. Amen.

About this Plan

He Drew Near: A Christmas Journey of Hope and Presence

Christmas is the story of a God who comes close. In this 12-day devotional, we reflect on how Jesus stepped into our world with humility, hope and love — not as a distant king but as one who draws near to the lowly and the waiting. Each day offers Scripture, reflection and prayer to help us slow down and see how the birth of Christ speaks to our everyday lives. His coming isn’t just something to celebrate. It’s something to experience. May this journey lead you to wonder, worship and a deeper awareness of his nearness this season.
