“30 Pictures of Jesus” 30 Day Plan

DAY 16 OF 30

Today we see Jesus as the Judge.

From the beginning of history, humanity has wondered what God is like. Nations built idols of gold and silver, hoping these images represented divine power. Religious systems developed around the desperate need to prove ourselves acceptable to the gods. But these efforts were built on ignorance. They were guesses about who the gods were, what they wanted, and how they would judge us.

The good news of the Bible is that the true God does not remain unknown. He makes himself known, not only in his being but also in his will. To Israel, God revealed his law so they could know what he considered good and evil, right and wrong. Yet the nations continued in darkness, trapped in their ignorance, worshiping idols of their own imagination.

When Paul stood in Athens at the Areopagus, he was surrounded by these idols. Among them was one dedicated “to the unknown god,” a monument to human guessing. But Paul announced that the true God has made himself known in Jesus. Jesus is the image of the invisible God. In his life and death, he revealed God’s character, God’s will, and God’s standard of righteousness. And in his resurrection, Jesus proved that he is the King of the universe, enthroned with the authority to judge the world.

This is good news. We no longer have to guess what the gods are like. We do not need to fear whether our sacrifices are acceptable or if we’ve done enough. The true God has revealed himself in Jesus and shown us exactly what he desires. And the one who will judge us is not an idol or an unknown deity but the crucified and risen Lord.

Jesus’ resurrection guarantees that he is the judge of all. But unlike every other human judge or imagined god, Jesus is merciful and compassionate. He is slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love, and even died for his enemies. To know that our judge is Jesus is to know that the one evaluating our lives is also the one who gave his life to forgive us.

The Judge of the world has been revealed—and he is good news for all who trust him.
