“30 Pictures of Jesus” 30 Day Plan

DAY 19 OF 30

Today we see Jesus as the Resurrection and the Life.

In the beginning, humanity was created to live forever with God. In Eden, the Tree of Life was a sign that life flows from God’s presence. As long as Adam and Eve lived with him, they would enjoy unending life. But when they chose their own way, they cut themselves off from the source of life. Death entered the world. Humanity became enslaved to sin, repeating destructive choices that only deepened the shadow of death (Romans 5:12).

This is why resurrection is not just desirable but necessary. We need more than longer lives or better choices. We need to be freed from sin’s death-producing grip. We need someone who can not only undo our end in the grave but also deliver us from the way of life that keeps producing death in us and around us.

This is what Jesus claims in John 11. Standing at the tomb of his friend Lazarus, he says: “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die” (John 11:25). Then he proves it. With a word, he calls Lazarus out of death and into life. The one who is life itself shows that he has authority not only to raise the dead but to defeat death at its source.

And this miracle points ahead to Jesus’ own death and resurrection. On the cross, Jesus bore the full weight of humanity’s sin—not his own, but the sins of others. He died under their hatred, rebellion, and violence. But by rising, he triumphed over them all. Sin and death exhausted their power against him, and he still lives. This means that in Jesus’ cross, we are invited to join him in death, putting our “body of death” to death with him (Romans 6:6). And just as he rose, we rise with him into newness of life (Romans 6:4).

This is good news. Jesus is not only the one who can raise us from the grave—he is the one who gives us new life today. To trust him is to die with him to sin and rise with him to righteousness. With Jesus, death is no longer our master. He is. And he is life.
