Jesus Gives Me Purpose

In the Bible, we meet ordinary people whose lives were transformed when Jesus gave them purpose. These weren’t superheroes or famous athletes—just everyday folks. Yet their encounters with Jesus changed everything!

Peter and Andrew were fishermen on the Sea of Galilee. Day after day, they cast nets, hauled fish, sold their catch, and mended their nets. Then one day, as they fished, Jesus walked by and said, “Come, follow me and I will send you out to fish for people” Matthew 4:19 (NIV). Immediately, they left their nets—and their livelihood—to follow Jesus.

A little farther down the shore, Jesus saw James and John, sons of Zebedee, and called them, too. Without hesitation, they left their boat, nets, and family to follow Him.

All of the disciples found new purpose as they moved from ordinary jobs to world-changing service. After Jesus’ ascension, they carried this new purpose from Galilee into every corner of the known world.

Jesus continues to give people purpose. He takes our unique talents and passions and invites us to use them for His kingdom. In John 10:10, He said, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (NIV). He wants us to know why we’re here and to pursue it wholeheartedly.

When we follow Jesus—the Light of the World—He illuminates our path and reveals our purpose. He transforms ordinary lives into extraordinary adventures. The question for each of us is simple: Will we follow Jesus and discover the amazing purpose He has for our lives? The greatest adventure awaits!
