Jesus Is Our "Light of the World"

DAY 3 OF 7

Jesus is My Hope

In Jesus’ time, the Roman Empire ruled Israel. A Roman centurion—an officer in charge of one-hundred soldiers—found himself in a desperate situation: his friend and servant was very sick.

The centurion had heard about Jesus, who was healing the sick. Caring deeply for his servant, the centurion wondered, “Would Jesus help a Roman?” With humility and courage, he asked.

In Luke 7:7b-8, we read the words of the centurion:

“Say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” (NIV)

Watch how this plays out:

The centurion recognized that Jesus had supreme authority—over sickness and health—just as the centurion had authority over his soldiers. With simple faith, he believed Jesus’ word alone was enough to heal.

“When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, ‘I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.’” (Luke 7:9, NIV)

In our lives, we can face situations that feel hopeless. But our hope in Jesus is never misplaced. He responds to genuine faith. Today, we can bring our worries to Jesus and trust in His authority. In faith, we can watch Him bring hope and healing to your life.

Reflection Questions

  • Why do you think we sometimes doubt that Jesus can help us?
  • What can we learn from the centurion’s humility when he prayed?
  • How does hope in Jesus change how you see and serve others?
