Fighting the Lie of Not Good Enough

DAY 5 OF 5

Can Be Confident Because of What God Says About Me

I want you to take a little field trip today. Go find your hairbrush and bring it back here. If you don’t have a brush, grab a recently used ponytail holder.

Now, clean it. Pull out all the hairs from the brush or elastic. And count them. Lay them out one by one and count them. I’ll wait.

How’d that go? How many hairs did you count? Ten or twenty? Fifty? Over a hundred? Or did you lose track? Or maybe you looked at that pile of a tangled mess and just gave up. Counting the number of hairs left behind in your brush or ponytail holder is a nearly impossible task, isn’t it? Can you imagine trying to count each hair on your head? Ridiculous, right?

But God knows. He knows the exact number of hairs on your head at any given moment. They are numbered. And that means he knows how many you lose each time you brush it, wash it, or pull out those elastic rubber bands. He still knows the number.

In Matthew 10, when Jesus tells us that even the hairs on our heads are numbered, he’s making a point about our worth. He also talks about the sparrow—it took two of them to equal the value of a single penny. Yet God considered the sparrow valuable: not one would fall to the ground outside his care (Matthew 10:29). God gives individual attention to each of the millions of sparrows on this earth, and he deems you more important than many.

Do you see how important you are to your Heavenly Father? God cares about the sparrow falling to the ground, and he cares even more about you—your daily activities, your troubles, and your successes...even the number of hairs on your head—because you are valuable to him.

It’s so easy to question your worth, especially when you start comparing it to those around you. She’s more athletic. She’s prettier. Her family has more money. She has nicer things. She’s smarter. She’s more popular.

But your worth isn’t determined by her or what she has. Jesus defined your worth as priceless when he chose to die on the cross for you. And that is where you can find your confidence.

Prayer Prompt: Ask God to help you grow in God-confidence, trusting that he created you, can use you, and sees worth in you.

About this Plan

Fighting the Lie of Not Good Enough

Not good enough…it doesn’t take long for these words to enter a girl’s heart. Not good enough to make the team or be in the popular group; not a good enough daughter, sister, student, friend... the list goes on. But what does it mean to be “good”? In this 5-day plan by author Kelsey Scism, middle school girls will look at God’s view of “good” and how that can shape the way they see themselves.
