Fighting the Lie of Not Good Enough

DAY 3 OF 5

What If I Don’t Like Me?

Too fat. Too skinny. Too loud. Too quiet. Too short. Too tall. Too dark. Too pale. Too dumb. Too nerdy. Too...me.

Do you ever have days when you don’t like yourself and have trouble believing anyone else could—even God?

If I google “Bible verses about how much God loves you,” one of the first results shows forty different verses. God’s Word makes it abundantly clear—he loves you. And this love isn’t dependent on you. It doesn’t change because of your behavior or his mood. You are not too anything to prevent God from loving you.

You are God’s creation, made in his image. God looked at all he had made (even the mosquito) and declared it was good. Very good. What does this mean for you? It means that as God’s creation, he has declared that you are good.

Satan doesn’t want you to believe that God loves you. He doesn’t want you to see yourself as a very good creation. He would much rather you get stuck in the endless cycle of too this or too that because it distracts you from the truth of God’s Word. He wants you to feel unlikeable because that makes his job easier, and his job is to fill you with lies so you don’t have room for God’s truth.

Okay, that’s great, you’re thinking, Satan = lies and God = truth. But how does that help me when I don’t like myself? This is the part where I wish I was sitting next to you. I’d hand you a tissue as the tears fall and you whisper, releasing the pain of admitting that you don’t like yourself. Because it’s right then that I would take your hand, squeeze it tightly, and say, “You don’t have to like yourself for God to love you.”

God’s love isn’t dependent on your feelings. He created you and calls you good—very good—no matter how you feel about yourself.

Every time one of those nasty too-something thoughts pops into your brain, stop and whisper these words: “God created me, and he calls me good. I don’t have to like myself for God to love me.”

Prayer Prompt: Admit that there are things you don’t like about yourself and ask God to help you replace Satan’s lies with God’s truth, relying on his love and not your feelings.

About this Plan

Fighting the Lie of Not Good Enough

Not good enough…it doesn’t take long for these words to enter a girl’s heart. Not good enough to make the team or be in the popular group; not a good enough daughter, sister, student, friend... the list goes on. But what does it mean to be “good”? In this 5-day plan by author Kelsey Scism, middle school girls will look at God’s view of “good” and how that can shape the way they see themselves.
