Attributes of God on F.I.R.E.

DAY 26 OF 28

How can we be zealous for God?

“Zeal” as used in the New Testament means to bubble, boil. Paul exhorts the saints in Rome, “not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord” (Romans 12:11).

An example of this type of zeal can be seen in the person of Apollos as recorded in Acts 18:24–28. Apollos, a fervent teacher of Scripture, was a learned man. He had received instruction in the Holy Scriptures “and being fervent in spirit” exemplified a great zeal for the Lord “though he knew only the baptism of John.” Apollos was learned but he was also teachable as displayed when Aquila and Priscilla “explained to him the way of God more accurately.” His zeal for God led him to vigorously refute opponents and encourage believers. This zealot for the Lord had a balanced ministry consisting of edification (Acts 18:27) and evangelism (Acts 18:28). May our zeal match his!

Surely Paul’s jealousy (zeal) for those he led to Jesus flows from his life and pen. Paul cared so much for these saints that when he needed a zealous man for the Lord to help them, he sent his unmatched son in the faith, Timothy, “who will remind you of my ways in Christ” (1 Corinthians 4:14–17). Why would Paul make such a great effort for his spiritual children? “For I am zealous for you with godly jealousy…” (2 Corinthians 11:2). Simply stated, the one who led these heathens to Jesus zealously aspires for them to mature spiritually to look more like Jesus and as Timothy mirrored Paul’s ways, that they might also do the same!

Jesus’ message to the church of Laodicea further emphasizes the importance of zeal in faith. Criticizing their lukewarm spirituality, “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot.” He calls them to “…be zealous and repent” (Revelation 3:14-22). Jesus wanted these saints to be on fire for Him which underscores His desire for us to remain passionate in our faith and service.

Employment Point: Zealously serve God.

About this Plan

Attributes of God on F.I.R.E.

Attributes of God on F.I.R.E. is a topical study on the nature of God. We will examine fourteen of God’s communicable attributes or perfections that belong to Him that He also shares with us. This study will help us better understand the amazing nature of the Lord, and to pattern ourselves after Him. F.I.R.E. stands for familiarity, interpretation, relationship, and employment. We will use this methodology as we travel through the Scriptures together. Adapted from the book Attributes of God on F.I.R.E., by Dr. Ken J. Burge, Sr.
