Attribute #12 - Wisdom
To God who alone is wise (1 Timothy 1:17)
Jesus had a special placement for Paul, having called him on the road to Damascus (Acts 9:4). Paul's transformation from persecutor of the church to apostle highlights the depth of God’s wisdom. In 1 Timothy 1:12–17, Paul openly testifies that “the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant” in his calling and he understands that the Lord’s work in his life “might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life.” Having meditated upon God’s marvelous wisdom, Paul exclaims, “Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever” (1 Timothy 1:17).
In God’s wisdom Paul is specifically dispatched “to preach the gospel, not where Christ was named” (Romans 15:20). Paul had been entrusted with an ambassadorship to convey the gospel, a New Testament mystery, beyond the borders of the Jewish people to the Gentiles (in the New Testament a mystery consists of a sacred secret that once had been unknown but now revealed). The message of the gospel was not fully disclosed to the Old Testament saints but has been “made manifest” to us. Paul praises the Lord’s wisdom in this revelation --“to God, alone wise, be glory through Jesus Christ forever” (Romans 16:25–27).
The Lord brought the gospel to His own people; however, the person of Jesus and His message were rejected (John1:11). The rejection of Jesus led to the birth of the church and the extension of salvation to the Gentiles, fulfilling God’s eternal plan: “But through their fall, to provoke them to jealousy, salvation has come to the Gentiles” (Romans 11:11). Paul marvels at the depth of God’s wisdom in orchestrating these events, declaring, “Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments” (Romans 11:33).
The God who possesses all wisdom has a blueprint not only for the lost to be found (salvation), but also for those found to be eternally secure. Jude praises the Lord’s wisdom to complete the profound work He has begun in us. Only a wise God has the capability to present us without blemish “before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy” (Jude 24-25).
Employment Point: God is eternally wise.
About this Plan

Attributes of God on F.I.R.E. is a topical study on the nature of God. We will examine fourteen of God’s communicable attributes or perfections that belong to Him that He also shares with us. This study will help us better understand the amazing nature of the Lord, and to pattern ourselves after Him. F.I.R.E. stands for familiarity, interpretation, relationship, and employment. We will use this methodology as we travel through the Scriptures together. Adapted from the book Attributes of God on F.I.R.E., by Dr. Ken J. Burge, Sr.
