Acts 1

1
The Promise of the Holy Spirit
1The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, # Lk 1:3 concerning all that Jesus began both to do and teach, # Lk 24:19 2until the day when He was taken up, after He had given commandments through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom He had chosen, 3to whom He presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, appearing to them for forty days, # Jn 20:26; 1Co 15:5–7 and speaking concerning the kingdom of God. 4Being assembled with them, He commanded them, “Do not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, of which you have heard from Me. # Lk 24:49; Jn 14:16 # 1:4 Lk 24:49. 5For John baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” # Mt 3:11; Lk 3:16
The Ascension
6So when they had come together, they asked Him, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” # Mt 17:11
7He said to them, “It is not for you to know the times or the dates, which the Father has fixed by His own authority. # Da 2:21; Mt 24:36; Mk 13:32 8But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” # Mt 28:19; Mk 16:15
9When He had spoken these things, while they looked, He was taken up. # Lk 24:50–51; Ac 1:2 And a cloud removed Him from their sight.
10While they looked intently toward heaven as He ascended, behold, two men stood by them in white garments. # Lk 24:4; Jn 20:12 11They said, “Men of Galilee, # Ac 2:7; 13:31 why stand looking toward heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you to heaven, will come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”
Judas’ Successor
12Then they returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, # Mt 21:1; Lk 24:52 which is a Sabbath day’s walk # 1:12 About half a mile. from Jerusalem. 13When they had entered, they went up into the upper room, # Ac 20:8 where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot; and Judas the son of James. # Mt 10:2–4 14These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, # Ac 2:42 with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers. # Mt 12:46
15In those days Peter stood up among the disciples (the number of people together was about one hundred and twenty), and said, 16“Brothers, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit previously spoke by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became the guide to those who seized Jesus. # Mt 26:47; Jn 13:18 17For he was numbered with us and took part in this ministry.” # Jn 6:70–71; Ac 1:25
18(Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity. # Mt 27:3–10 And falling headlong, he burst asunder in the middle and all his organs spilled out. 19It became known to all the residents of Jerusalem. So this field is called in their dialect Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)
20“For it is written in the Book of Psalms,
‘Let his habitation become desolate,
and let no one live in it,’ # Ps 69:25 # 1:20 Ps 69:25.
and,
‘Let another take his office.’ # Ps 109:8 # 1:20 Ps 109:8.
21Therefore, of these men who have accompanied us while the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, # Nu 27:17; Dt 31:2 22beginning from the baptism of John until the very day that He was taken up from us, # Ac 1:2 one of these men must become with us a witness of His resurrection.” # Ac 1:8–9
23So they proposed two, Joseph, called Barsabbas, # Ac 15:22 who was named Justus, and Matthias. 24Then they prayed, “You, Lord, who knows the hearts of all men, # 1Sa 16:7; Jer 17:10 show which of these two You have chosen 25to take the place in this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, to go to his own place.” 26Then they cast lots, # Lev 16:8 and the lot fell on Matthias. So he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
