What does it say? David’s song of praise shows the heart of God, Who is actively involved in the lives of His people. What does it mean? As David came to the end of his amazing life, he reflected on all he had seen God do. Though it’s possible he wrote this song of praise when he was young, its themes and application show that it is timeless. Through trial and tribulation, war and peace, mountains and valleys, David had witnessed God’s faithfulness in every situation. David recognized God for who He is: the powerful, loving God who is always active and purposefully taking care of His people, deserving of praise. How should I respond? One of the primary themes of 1-2 Samuel is the unerring providence of God. Every step of the way, from the birth of Samuel to the reign of David, God has moved, worked, and acted upon his good plans. David's song of praise is a reminder to us that God is playing the long game. Sometimes we can become impatient or even distressed when be believe God to be absent or aloof. However, God is never idle. He is always bringing about his purposes of redemption. Truly we can declare with David, "Great salvation he brings to us, and shows loyal love to his anointed." One day, either in this life or in the one to come, you will look back and realize the depths by which God was working for your good and His glory all along.
