Every Good and Perfect Gift - a 5-Day Advent Devotional

DAY 2 OF 5

Wisdom

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God,
who gives generously to all without finding fault,
and it will be given to you.”
James 1:5 NIV

Life constantly presents us with situations that leave us feeling unsure, confused, or overwhelmed. In those moments, we can easily turn to our own understanding—or worse, to the opinions of others—without first seeking God’s wisdom. Yet James 1:5 is a beautiful reminder that wisdom is not something we must earn through years of experience or endless striving. It is a gift from God, freely given to those who ask.

Notice how James describes God’s generosity: He gives wisdom “generously to all without finding fault.” God does not withhold wisdom because of our past mistakes, our current doubts, or our lack of knowledge. Instead, He delights in giving us insight, clarity, and understanding when we humbly recognize our need for Him.

Mary’s response to the angel Gabriel, “How will this be?” was not a sign of unbelief but an honest, open-hearted question (Luke 1:34 NIV). In her willingness to ask and listen, we see a beautiful Advent picture of wisdom: not knowing all the answers but trusting the One who does. In this season, we, too, can come before God with our questions, confident that He gives wisdom generously to those who seek Him.

But there’s a key action required on our part: asking.

It’s simple but often neglected. Instead of relying on our limited perspective, God invites us into a relationship of dependence where we look to Him for guidance. Whether we face a small daily decision or a life-changing crossroad, His wisdom is available to direct our steps. In addition, asking for wisdom isn’t a one-time prayer; it’s a posture of the heart. It means coming before God regularly, acknowledging our limitations, and trusting Him to guide us through His Word, by His Spirit, and through godly counsel.

Reflect

What decisions or challenges are you facing right now that require God’s wisdom? Have you paused to ask Him for guidance? How can you create space today to listen for His answer?

Pray

Father, thank You for Your promise to give wisdom generously. I confess that I often try to figure things out on my own. Today, I bring my questions and uncertainties before You. Please guide me with Your perfect wisdom and help me to trust Your leading. In Jesus’s name, Amen.

About this Plan

Every Good and Perfect Gift - a 5-Day Advent Devotional

Every good and perfect gift truly comes from above. From His Word that brings life and truth, to the wisdom that guides our steps, to the presence of Christ living within us—God continues to pour out His goodness on His people. His provision meets our every need, and His joy sustains us in every season. Each gift reveals His heart—a Father who delights in giving to His children. Advent reminds us that the greatest gift of all was the moment the Word became flesh, bringing light, life, and hope to the world.
