Every Good and Perfect Gift - a 5-Day Advent DevotionalNäide

The Word
“The Word became flesh and made his
dwelling among us. We have seen his glory,
the glory of the one and only Son, who came
from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
John 1:14 NIV
In the beginning, God spoke. With His Word, He formed the heavens and the earth. He painted sunrises, carved mountains, stirred oceans, and breathed life into humanity—each one made in His image. His Word was not just sound; it was power, truth, and presence.
Throughout the Old Testament, God continued to speak, revealing Himself to His people through covenants, prophets, and His Law. “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets” (Hebrews 1:1 ESV). His voice called, commanded, corrected, and comforted.
And then, at Advent, God did something even more personal. “In the beginning was the Word . . . and the Word was God. . . . And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:1, 14a ESV). Jesus, the eternal Word, stepped into His creation—born in a manger, held in human arms. God’s voice took on skin and bone.
Mary cradled the Word of God. Joseph protected Him. The Creator who spoke the stars into being now cried in the night. He came full of grace and truth, shining light into our darkness.
And today, the Word still dwells with us in Scripture. The written Word reveals the living Word. Through it, God still speaks today. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105 ESV). It brings clarity in chaos, hope in hardship, and truth when the world is loud and misleading. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16 NIV). In the pages of Scripture, we hear the voice of our Shepherd, guiding us every step of the way.
Reflect
When was the last time God used His Word to speak directly to your heart? How might you make space to listen again today? How might you use (or steward) this gift to bless others?
Pray
Jesus, thank You for being the Word made flesh. Speak to me through Your Word, and help me treasure it as the gift it truly is. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
About this Plan

Every good and perfect gift truly comes from above. From His Word that brings life and truth, to the wisdom that guides our steps, to the presence of Christ living within us—God continues to pour out His goodness on His people. His provision meets our every need, and His joy sustains us in every season. Each gift reveals His heart—a Father who delights in giving to His children. Advent reminds us that the greatest gift of all was the moment the Word became flesh, bringing light, life, and hope to the world.
