God’s Rainbow of Promises: A 5-Day Plan for Kids With American Sign Language

DAY 5 OF 5

Day 5: When You Feel Mad, Cry Out to God

Sometimes, when a friend takes a toy you want or you lose a game, you become so angry that you want to fight. There will also be days when you get mad because things just don't go the way you want them to. It's normal to feel angry, but fighting out of anger isn't the best solution.

The Bible tells us that God hears us when we cry out to Him, even during our moments of anger. Instead of screaming out of anger at someone, you can call out to God and give that anger to Him. God wants you to come to Him with every emotion (as seen through this reading plan!), and the Bible offers many examples of how God wants us to act whenever we feel strong emotions like anger. Practice crying out to God the next time you're feeling mad.

And don’t be surprised if you feel angry one day because you witnessed something unfair happen to someone else. Perhaps you see a classmate pushing a friend on purpose at the playground, and you feel upset seeing a friend being hurt. Instead of fighting the classmate out of anger, you can pause, take a deep breath, and then decide to help by telling your teacher. The teacher will step in to remedy the situation, and you’ll feel less mad. You can treat others exactly how you want them to treat you. That’s what we call the golden rule, and that’s because it’s so valuable to know and understand.

Discuss:

Think about a time you made a poor choice because you were angry. How could crying out to God change that situation for the better?

Watch and Sign:

Watch the video and practice the American Sign Language (ASL) signs for the word ‘mad’ and the phrase ‘cry out to God.’

“When you feel mad, cry out to God.”

Prayer:

Dear Lord, You are strong enough to handle the anger I give up to You as I cry out. I pray to be slow to anger like You. Thank You for Your love and patience with my every emotion. Amen.

About this Plan

God’s Rainbow of Promises: A 5-Day Plan for Kids With American Sign Language

Inspired by the board book, God’s Rainbow of Promises, written by Deaf and hearing sisters Janet Moreno and Jennifer Fusco, this plan covers five common emotions that kids experience and teaches them to navigate these feelings with the help of Scripture and American Sign Language (ASL). Children will learn to choose positive and biblically informed ways to manage their emotions and foster practical understanding and application of God’s Word with physical reminders through ASL alliteration.
